LOCAL HIT WITH THIRD WAVE OF LAYOFFS

For the third time this year (February, May and now July), the Company has issued permanent layoff notices to some of our members. 57 notices were handed out on July 2nd bringing the total to approximately 177 for the year. Of the initial 64 members laid off in February, we effectively worked to offset permanent layoffs by identifying open jobs, negotiating the return of all work outsourced due to capacity and by ensuring the optimum number of SEROs and Special Retirement Bonuses. In May we weren’t quite so successful, however, out of 56 layoffs, 51 members were placed leaving only 5 on permanent layoff status.

Most of the 57 members who received notices on July 2nd are still working through the placement procedure so it’s too early to tell how they will end up. Some will secure placement on the few remaining open jobs while others by replacing SERO candidates in their affected classes and categories but despite these marginal offsets, it looks like more of our members will be joining the ranks of the unemployed. Therefore it is more important than ever for the remaining members to act and work responsibly to minimize further layoffs and to ensure the quickest recall of our Brothers and Sisters on the street.

UE DISTRICT SIX DUES INCREASE

At the last District Council meeting, held June 9, 2001, the delegates voted to increase the district per-capita by thirty-five (.35) cents. The increase raises the per-capita from $1.85 per member, per month to $2.20. The new per-capita, which becomes effective this month, was approved after the trustees reviewed the finances and reported their recommendations for creating a balanced budget. Along with the per-capita increase the delegates also voted to cut district meeting expenses.

UE District Six plays a vital role in Western Pennsylvania, North Eastern New York and in parts of West Virginia. The District, operating on a very modest budget and limited staffing, serves as the nucleus for generating and supporting all organizing campaigns, overseeing all contract negotiations and servicing all UE Locals in the region.

For the short-term, the Local 506 financial officers will not be asking the membership for a dues increase. Instead, we would like to review and assess not only the impact of the District increase but also the effect permanent and temporary layoffs have had on the Local’s finances. A proposed UE National per–capita increase also comes into the equation as it will be discussed and voted on during the 66th UE National Convention in September. The August UE NEWS will provide more information on the National per-capita increase and the matter will be discussed in depth at the August Membership meetings.
