UE Local 506 Sports Committee

The UE 506 Sports Committee is constantly at work organizing recreational events like the annual golf tournament, volleyball tournament and and bowling tournament, among others.

In addition to this they are responsible for fund raising events in the community, most notably the annual VA 5K Run/Walk to benefit the Veterans Hospital.

When they are not busy doing that, they are designing and providing the tee-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, hats and other articles with the UE 506 logo to promote special events or just for everyday Union visibility.

Members of the UE 506 Sports Committee include:
Roger Zaczyk, Matt McCracken, Nancy Morrison, Mark Pierson, Karen Rubay, Dave Perry, Denny McLaughlin, and Jon Jelinek

With a lot of help from a lot of UE 506 Members.

SPORTS SHORTS

-By Dennis McLaughlin, Chairman

In the next couple of months, the members on our committee will be holding two of their most anticipated events of the year so get out and support your Sports Committee.

The first event on the calendar is our annual Volleyball "Turkey Tournament" slated for November 18, 2007 at the Iroquois High School Gym. The competition begins at 9am sharp, with team captains meeting at 8:15am. See your Chief Steward for applications.

The 2nd significant event involves baskets full of fine refreshments. I am talking about the Basket of Cheer. We will be giving away at least 6 baskets stocked full of your favorite holiday beverages. Buy you tickets early so you have a chance of winning at the end of the first shift membership meeting on December 20, 2007

Our plan is to use this event as a fundraiser for the Erie VAMC Veteran funding needs.

The focus of our tournament will be to benefit the nursing home care units.  We would like to provide a more home-like environment for the veteran patients in these units, specifically in an effort to be more accommodating to the younger generation of soldiers returning from Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.    Funds received for this cause would be deposited in our Library Fund to purchase computers, printers and internet access, as well as, other forms of electronic entertainment, such as video games and consoles.

The bowling tournaments over the past four years raised enough funds to upgrade the Library’s Closed Circuit Television System for the resident patients at the Erie VAMC, provided the ability to enhance the recreation programs for the veteran patients (inpatient and outpatient) at the Erie VAMC, purchased a new van for the Volunteer Transportation Network Program and also assisted the VA Homeless Veteran Program to purchase much needed comfort items for our homeless veterans.
