SPECIAL ELECTION NOTICE

NOMINATE LOCAL 506 TRUSTEE

Local 506 Trustee Jeffrey Morealli was recently elected to the Building 2 Chief Steward Office, therefore a special election will be held during the March 16, 2006 Membership Meetings to fill the vacancy.
Any Member in good standing can be nominated to run for Trustee provided they meet the provisions of Article V of the UE Local 506 Constitution. Nominations for the Office of Trustee will be taken from the floor at the February 16, 2006 Membership Meetings. The successful candidate will fill the remainder of the 2006-2007 term of office. If you need a copy of the 506 Constitution outlining all election rules, please see your Divisional Chief Steward or stop at the 506 Hall for a copy.

2006-2007 MEMBERSHIP CARDS SENT OUT

By now, every Local 506 Member should have received a 2006-2007 Membership card. By popular request, we significantly changed the card’s design.

Hopefully, you immediately signed and placed the card in your wallets and threw out the old card. If not, we urge you to do that today so you will have it on hand when needed.

FRANKLY SPEAKING

General President John Hovis will attend the February membership meetings; he will swear in the newly elected Chief Stewards and give a report on the CBC meeting that he and Steve Tormey recently attended.

Now that the Chief Stewards elections are complete we can assemble the Job Preservation Steering Committee. Since its inception the JPSC has been responsible for saving many jobs during the lean times, now, during these busy times the JPSC can make sure that all areas are working at capacity.

Speaking of the Chief Stewards election, I’d like to thank, Dave Adams (Bldg. 10), Frank Barnes (Bldg. 7), Dennis Crawford (Bldg. 12), Ralph Mannarino (Plant Services), and Larry Pietrasiewicz (Bldg. 2) for all of their hard work over the years.

The announcement that the Steris Corp. is moving to Mexico came as a shock; more than three hundred union brothers and sisters will lose their jobs over the next six months. The American Sterilizer Corporation was founded in Erie in 1898; they produced hospital equipment that was known worldwide for its quality. The merger between the Steris Corp. of Ohio and American Sterilizer occurred in 1995. The company was not in financial trouble; the move to Mexico was strictly an effort to increase profits. The members of UAW Local 832 were in the final year of an eight-year labor contract. Hopefully, Congressman English’s office will be more helpful in Local 832’s quest for TAA benefits than he was in the late nineties when 506 tried to enlist his help.

GE is looking to make changes to the Job Posting procedure, the company gave us a list of proposals that will be discussed at this month’s membership meetings.
